How to Calculate Your FAST and NED Merit (With Examples)

FAST and NED both give real weight to your board marks, unlike NUST and GIKI. Here is how each one works.

FAST formulas

ProgrammeTestHSSCSSC
Engineering33%50%17%
Computing (incl. BS CS)50%40%10%

Example: Test 60%, HSSC 85%, SSC 90%

  • Engineering: (60 × 0.33) + (85 × 0.50) + (90 × 0.17) = 77.6
  • Computing: (60 × 0.50) + (85 × 0.40) + (90 × 0.10) = 73.0

The same student has a higher engineering merit because their board marks are stronger than their test score.

NED formula

Merit = (NED test % × 0.60) + (HSSC Part I % × 0.40)

Example: NED test 75%, HSSC Part I 78%

(75 × 0.60) + (78 × 0.40) = 76.2

You must score at least 50% in the NED test to qualify. A-Level students use O-Level equivalence instead of HSSC Part I.

The lesson

If you are aiming for FAST engineering or NED, do not neglect your board exams. At these two universities, Inter marks are 40–50% of your merit.
