FAST Admission Test: How to Prepare for Advanced Maths and IQ

The FAST admission test is different from most engineering tests. It is mostly Maths, it has negative marking, and calculators are not allowed.

The pattern (BS CS and Engineering)

SectionShare
Advanced Maths50%
Basic Maths20%
Analytical Skills / IQ20%
English10%

There is no Physics or Chemistry section. If your preparation is mostly Physics, you are preparing for the wrong paper.

Three things that matter most

1. Mental arithmetic. With no calculator, you need to simplify, estimate and calculate by hand quickly. Practise without a calculator from day one.

2. Careful guessing. Negative marking means a wild guess can cost you. Answer only when you can eliminate at least two options.

3. IQ practice. Series, patterns and logical puzzles carry 20%. They improve quickly with daily practice.

Alternatives to the FAST test

FAST also accepts SAT or NTS NAT results in place of its own test. Pick one route only.

Merit reminder

For engineering, the test counts only 33% and HSSC counts 50%. For computing it is test 50%, HSSC 40%. See How to calculate your FAST merit.
